Why are the Commencement deadlines for the final exam so early?
The early deadlines are necessary to prepare for Commencement planning, and to ensure you receive your diploma at the Graduation Ceremony. The Registrar’s Office will only be printing diplomas for students who have RSVP to attend the ceremony. If you will not be attending, your diploma will be mailed to you approximately 2 to 3 weeks after the last day of the term.
Is there any flexibility in the deadlines?
The deadline for Applying for Graduation (diploma app) and Confirming Attendance are for the marching order list, so it’s important to meet these deadlines. It’s better to say you’re attending than to try and add you in later even if you’re not sure. The final exam date and completing all degree requirements, including uploading the final copy of your thesis, can be flexible. It’s important to communicate with the Graduate School, by emailing [email protected]. If your final exam is scheduled very late in the term, especially if it’s a thesis exam, it’s possible you may not receive your diploma at the ceremony.
Can I have my final exam on finals week and still attend Commencement?
Yes, but if it’s a thesis exam and the final thesis in not uploaded to ScholarsArchive by June 16, 2023 you will not receive a spring diploma. A Master’s non-thesis final exam completed on finals week by June 16, 2023, will receive a spring diploma, but most likely not receive it at the commencement ceremony. If you do not receive your diploma at the commencement ceremony, you can arrange with the Registrar's Office to have it mailed to you.
What if I have to cancel my final exam at the last minute but my parents already have made travel arrangements, can I still attend?
Yes, if you plan on completing your degree summer term, be sure to complete the summer completing commencement form, get signatures and submit it to the Graduate School by the deadline.
Why do I have to fill out the form if completing summer term and attending Commencement?
Many times, students think they are close to completing all degree requirements, but the major professor might not agree. The signatures and approximate exam date confirms a summer diploma.
What if my professor won’t sign the form?
You would not be able to attend the Commencement Ceremony. You would be invited to attend next year.
Once the deadlines have passed and I decide I want to attend Commencement can I still participate?
Possibly. Please email [email protected] to work out the details. Make sure you apply for graduation and confirm attendance by logging into MyOregonState, search for “commencement attendance” and select the appropriate resource link based on your level (undergraduate or graduate).
How do I register for Commencement?
Log into MyOregonState, search for “commencement attendance” and select the appropriate resource link based on your level (undergraduate or graduate).
Am I eligible to receive my diploma at Commencement?
Yes, if you complete all degree requirements including submitting the final thesis/dissertation to ScholarsArchive by the deadlines. If you have an exception to complete your requirements at a later date within or by the last day of the term, you may receive a blank diploma case. If so, you can arrange with the Registrar's Office to have it mailed to you.
Can I wear an honor cord?
All grad students are considered honor students, so honor cords are not worn.
Whom should I speak with if I require an accommodation ?
If you are a graduate with disabilities who may need accommodations at the Commencement Ceremony, please respond to the OSU Commencement Accommodations Survey (link available soon) by June 7, 2023.
