Embargoed and Sanctioned Countries

As a national research institution, Oregon State’s activities are subject to restrictions by several U.S. agencies, including the Department of State, Department of Commerce, and Department of the Treasury. This makes it difficult to accept applications from countries that are on the ITAR, EAR, and OFAC watch lists. If you are a citizen of, or were born in, one of the following fully embargoed and sanctioned countries, please contact graduate admissions prior to applying: Cuba, North Korea, Sudan, Syria.

Documents Needed for Application Review:

  1. Academic Records/Transcripts

  2. Test Scores

  3. Letters of Reference

  4. Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)

  5. Financial Documentation (INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS ONLY)

  6. Other materials may be requested by the program; please contact your graduate program for further instructions.

Do NOT send secondary school records.

  • Application materials may be scanned and uploaded into your online application, unless your proposed program directs otherwise.  Please contact your graduate program for further instructions.
  • You can upload application material within your application. Once you have completed the application, you can return to the site to verify that your application materials are complete and upload documents.
  • If you upload documents to the online application, do not send them to the Graduate School via regular mail or email. Sending duplicate documents slows the processing of your application.
  • If you choose not to use the document upload system, please send all materials to this mailing address:
        Graduate School
        Oregon State University
        Heckart Lodge
        2900 SW Jefferson Way
        Corvallis, Oregon 97331-1102
        USA

If admitted you will be required to submit OFFICIAL documentation prior to registration for courses.

Academic Records / Transcripts

Please provide unofficial academic transcripts from all institutions where coursework was completed or attempted in pursuit of an undergraduate or graduate degree. This includes, for example, coursework that was completed at a community college and later transferred to a four-year institution and counted towards the award of a bachelor’s degree.

Applicants may submit any transcripts in support of an application for graduate study that they deem necessary to convey a complete picture of their academic potential. However, transcripts detailing coursework not included as part of a formal degree program, such as those completed to fulfill continuing education requirements, will not be required.

If the institution is outside the United States, both an original language version and a certified English translation of all academic records and degree statements are required.  Please include certificates/diplomas for all degrees earned.

When ready to send official transcripts, please send electronic transcripts from the U.S. institutions you attended. Most universities use either Parchment or the National Student Clearinghouse services. Visit your college’s website to see which one they use. When ordering a transcript as part of your graduate admissions record, select Oregon State University-Graduate Admissions as the recipient.

Official paper transcripts can also be sent by postal mail to the address above but take longer to process.

Test Scores

Unofficial test scores will be accepted by the Graduate School for review. However, some programs require official test scores before they will consider the application complete. Please check with your graduate program to inquire whether they require official scores.

  • GRE:  Certain departments and programs require the GRE of all applicants. Address inquiries regarding GRE requirements to your proposed graduate program. The ETS institution code for OSU is 004586. Please use the department/major code 0000.

  • GMAT: The College of Business requires the GMAT. Please contact the College of Business MBA program for more information.

  • TOEFL / IELTS :  All applicants whose native language is not English, or did not receive a bachelor or higher degree in an English speaking country, must meet the minimum English language proficiency requirements for admission. The ETS institution code for OSU is 004586. A department code is not necessary.  All TOEFL scores are loaded into one central location where the academic programs can view the information.

  • Other tests:  Some graduate programs require additional tests. Address inquiries regarding additional requirements to your proposed graduate program.

Letters of Reference

As part of the application for admission, you may provide the names and email addresses of reference writers. The letter of reference system triggers an email to each reference writer and enables them to submit a confidential electronic letter for you. Electronic letters are added to your file once every working day.

If you choose to not use the letter of reference system, please ask your letter writers to mail confidential letters to the Graduate School; these will be added to your file within one week of receipt in most cases. If the program to which you are applying accepts unofficial letters (meaning you handled the opened letters), you can upload letters into your application in the document upload section.

Read our tips for working with reference providers.

Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) – If applicable

Applicants who have been granted Permanent Residence in the United States must provide a copy of the front and back of the Permanent Resident card prior to admission. Applicants who have applied for Permanent Residence, but whose applications have not yet been processed, can instead provide a copy of the USCIS Form I-797C, Notice of Action (A copy of the final Permanent Resident card is requested when it is available).  Please be aware that while the petition for Permanent Residency is being reviewed we will consider an application for admission to be international.

Financial Documentation
(for International applicants only)

Financial documentation is not required at the time of application. You may scan and upload financial documentation with your application materials OR you may wait until after your application has been accepted by the program.

If your application is accepted, the Graduate School will contact you via email to request the financial materials.

Note: If you will be taking courses as a distance student through OSU Extended Campus, and you will not be entering the U.S., we ask that you complete a certification form but proof of funding is not required. Please email graduate admissions to request the form.

Other materials may be requested by the program

Additional application requirements vary by program. The processing of your application will not be completed until your program receives all the required documents.  For specific instructions contact your proposed graduate program to inquire about requirements.

Graduate applications generally include some of the following:

  • Statement of Objectives indicating particular fields of interest. This is normally completed as part of the online application but may be uploaded separately into the application.

  • Résumé/Curriculum vitae

  • Writing samples for some programs

  • Program specific forms

Contact your proposed graduate program if you have questions regarding program requirements.
