Through the School of Arts and Communication, graduate students may participate in the following programs: Professional Music Teacher Education, the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (MAIS), and the Master of Education (EdM) with a focus in music education. The school offers graduate courses in music, music education, and music performance. OSU’s music education program is approved by state of Oregon Teachers Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). With careful planning, students may complete both the initial and continuing teaching licensure requirements, as well as a master’s degree.
Students who successfully complete the Professional Music Teacher Education program will be able to begin their teaching career while finishing work on the final 15 credits required for the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree. These credits may be completed during summers, evenings, and distance courses. The MAT degree will be awarded when students complete all course requirements and pass their final oral examination.

This program may serve as a primary, secondary, or third field of study in a MAIS degree.
