Life Work Balance at OSU

Oregon State University aspires to be a community where the diverse life roles of students, faculty and staff are respected and nurtured. We strive to create a family-friendly environment where your work life or school life can be balanced with your personal life.

The Office of Human Resources has a website that lists all the various support services at OSU and in the nearby Corvallis community.

Support Groups

Studies show that a community culture of positive mental health bolsters academic success and personal development. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides support groups for OSU graduate students on a variety of topics each term. Some topics include Parenting Support Group (with free childcare), International Students Support Group, Multiracial Student Connection, and SUCCEED Stress Management Workshop. Group counseling provides a safe and confidential place to share and explore your concerns as well as receive support from others facing a similar experience.

Outdoor Recreation in Corvallis

The greater Corvallis area offers countless opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. In the region, there are miles of hiking, running and biking trails, dog parks, and community sports and recreation leagues.

Oregon State University's College of Forestry manages a research forest just north of town called The McDonald and Dunn Research Forests. There you will find close to thirty miles of maintained trails and over one hundred miles of forest roads to enjoy.

Health Insurance

Oregon State has a strong institutional commitment to academics, student growth, and the development of individual responsibility. To further these goals, the university embraces the concept that catastrophic financial risks while attending the university should be minimized. OSU recommends all students maintain adequate health insurance coverage. At this time, international students are required to enroll in the OSU insurance plan. OSU requires that all non-resident international students and their dependents (living in the United States) be covered by health insurance.

Basic Needs Center

At the Basic Needs Center, the student team works together to build community, share resources, develop strategies and have fun along the way. BNC Student Leaders use their experience and training to help other students find resources and create a plan to make it to graduation

When students visit the BNC, they learn about the main campus food pantry, the BNC Textbook Lending Program and other resources funded by the student fees they pay each term.

Center for Advocacy, Prevention & Education (CAPE)

CAPE operates through a multi-disciplinary and collaborative approach to provide a continuum of programs and services designed to prevent interpersonal and gender-based violence (IP-GBV), and to support survivors of IP-GBV.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

Counseling and Psychological Services provides counseling, consultation, outreach and education to OSU students, faculty, and staff. CAPS does this in order to facilitate student’s academic success, mental health, and personal development and promote a culture of positive mental health at OSU. CAPS resources are available to Ecampus students who live within 50 miles of Corvallis and pay the university health fee.
