Dear University Colleagues:
It is my pleasure to inform you of the appointment of Dr. Phil Mote as Vice Provost and Dean for the Graduate School. He will begin his appointment on Feb. 1.
Phil currently serves as associate dean for strategic initiatives in the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, and director of the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute. He is the co-leader of the NOAA-funded Climate Impacts Research Consortium for the Northwest and he was the founding director of the Northwest Climate Science Center for the U.S. Department of the Interior. He served as a lead author for the Fourth and Fifth Assessment Reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, on three National Climate Assessments, and seven reports of the National Academy of Sciences. He is President-Elect of the Global Environmental Change Section of the American Geophysical Union.
Phil earned a B.A. in physics from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences from the University of Washington.
During his candidacy, Phil articulated a clear commitment to promoting both graduate student and graduate program success, supporting OSU’s research mission, and advancing the professional development of postdoctoral professionals. As Vice Provost and Dean, he will collaborate with leaders and faculty across OSU to lead the development and implementation of a compelling vision for excellence in graduate education. As an important component of this vision, he will forge closer collaboration between the Graduate School and the Research Office, the academic deans and associate deans for research, and the research institute and center directors. He will serve as a member of the Provost’s senior leadership team and on a number of working groups and councils charged to advance the strategic goals of the University.
I would like to offer my sincere gratitude to Dr. Steph Bernell for her service as Interim Vice Provost and Dean since last July. Steph has done an excellent job of advancing the work of the Graduate School over the past several months and has been an invaluable member of my leadership team.
Provost and Executive Vice President
