An education major at Oregon State University enables you to become a proactive educator. The Education program has several degree types and options.

Master of Education (Ed.M.)

This fully online program has four options:

  • Advanced Science and Mathematics Education
  • Free-Choice Learning
  • PK–12 English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
  • Social Justice in Education

Applicants to the Ed.M. program must possess teaching experience in a K–12 classrooms or an education-related setting. Because this major is practitioner-based, it requires access to a classroom or informal learning environment to apply educational research, theory, and pedagogical practices, and for completion of a final project.

Master of Science (M.S.)

The Master of Science (M.S.) in Education prepares candidates to be secondary science and mathematics teachers. Candidates work within a cohort of peers in science and mathematics education and are taught by faculty who specialize in and conduct educational research in science, mathematics, and equity.

Upon completion of the program, candidates will have:

  • A Master of Science degree in one option:
    • Science Education
    • Mathematics Education
  • An Oregon preliminary teaching license; and
  • One or more endorsements in Advanced Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Integrated Science or Physics.

It is also possible to earn an ESOL endorsement which includes additional courses and field experiences beyond the required number of credits.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

This is a research-oriented degree intended for doctoral candidates interested in becoming educational researchers and assume professional positions in a variety of settings, including colleges and universities, non-profit organizations, and government agencies.

Candidates select from three Ph.D. options. All options are offered on-campus in Corvallis:

  • Agricultural Education
  • Language Equity and Educational Policy (LEEP)
  • Science or Mathematics Education
