Q&A with Jeff Serrill

How has taking part in the GCCUT program affected your current position at OSU?

The GCCUT program has provided me with a wonderful working knowledge of the techniques and resources which are available to educators, both inside and outside of a university environment. These resources have allowed me to adapt the course which I've taught throughout my time at OSU in a manner which provides a more engaging experience for my students, and I feel that the course has significantly improved since my first time teaching it.

In what ways has taking part in the GCCUT program changed your thinking about teaching, learning, or higher education in general?

The GCCUT program was a wonderful way to develop a broad understanding of current issues within the current academic landscape, as well as the underlying philosophies inherent to many teaching methods which are commonly used today. As a graduate student with no previous formal training in education , this experience was instrumental in affecting my approach to many aspects of my own teaching, including the instructional methods which I'd like to employ in future academic settings.

Is there anything you would add about your GCCUT experience that you think would interest prospective students?

I was originally a bit skeptical about fitting 18 credits into my busy schedule, but by spacing it out over the course of two years, I found that this allowed me to really absorb the material as we went through it, without ever becoming too overwhelmed.
